I've been watching a number of these libraries myself, though for java. AjaxAnywhere http://ajaxanywhere.sourceforge.net/index.html looks to be my favorite with the same issues you raise here... not the cleanest javascript and some limits, but very easy for a JSTL developer to start using right away.

Ajax will give us something to hold us over til we are all about Flex 2.0 Flash =p

Hi Daryl. This is J. Max Wilson, the owner of the xajax project. Thanks for your interesting article. I'm glad that you have found xajax useful. We've been working hard on a new version of xajax and we plan to release a beta of the upcoming version later this week. Some of the great new features include:

* Error Handling: Non-fatal PHP errors can now be easily trapped and written to a log file or displayed in an alert dialog in the client.

* OOP: You can now register instance and static class methods to be callable through xajax. This is essential to make it easy to add xajax to many OOP CMS solutions.

* Internationalization: xajax defaults to use UTF-8, but we've added the ability to set the charset to whatever you need to.

* External Function Registration: you can now register functions that are defined in external .php files and xajax will dynamically include the file and call the function only if it is requested.

All of these changes and more are already implemented into the development version of xajax, and can be checked out of CVS by the impatient. (CVS Info: http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=139736 )

We will be setting up at xajaxproject.org soon where we plan to have a blog, a wiki, and community forums, but for now you can visit our forums at:

http://www.intuitivefuture.com/xajaxforums/

I am interested in your needs for further development with Drupal. Feel free to ask questions and make feature requests.
